How To Cast a Spell Endnote
By Hadier Jassim
In our research, we thought it would be educational and interesting to include a instructional forum on how to cast a spell. Not only did we think this would be fun for our audience, but it would also showcase Rowling's sense of imagination and creativity. Through my sources, particularly in How Harry Cast His Spell: The Meaning behind the Mania for J. K. Rowling's Bestselling Books I learned that Rowling's creative side didn't just start with Harry Potter, it had started in her elementary years. I also learned that J.K. Rowling related science into her development of spells and charms to make it more realistic and believable. Rowling's imagination that started when she was a little girl helped her create such a mystical world full of different incantations and that started a phenomenon in the world.
My choice of audience towards this genre would be for children that are in elementary school. I feel as if that age sparks a lot of imagination and creativity and that they would have a fun time pretending to cast spells and charms. I know there is a lot of controversy when it comes to parents not agreeing with Rowling's sense of wizardry and magic. In my opinion, kids will be kids and more creativity they experience in their life, the more it will benefit them when they're older. I learned that when Rowling was a young child, she had a vast imagination and creative side that her teachers would sometimes not let her go out for recess. I find that this would inhibit a child's creative touch and by not letting them imagine to their fullest ability, we as teachers are not fulfilling our duties as providers. Rowling's creative imagination landed her to be one of the best selling authors in the world. Creativity and imagination can lead a person into a great deal of things and I think with this genre showcased how Rowling did that.
I chose to do this type of genre because I wanted to illustrate the amount of creativity Rowling incorporates in her writing. Not everyone can make up a series of spells and charms to cast on individuals, but Rowling ceases to amaze. I think the way she used her imagination at such a young age and incorporated this into her literary works shows how intelligent she is as a writer. But not only did I do this genre to illustrate that, but I wanted to show how casting spells is a phenomenon in the world, especially at Universal Studios The Wizarding World of Harry Potter amusement park. I experienced this amusement park a couple years ago and all I can say is that it's amazing. Being a big fan of Harry Potter, I found myself in complete bliss. This was everything that the book was and more. Every detail, from hogsmeade (the market for wizards), Diagon Alley (the street where hogsmeade is on), and the food were exactly like the book. At this amusement park, they incorporated Ollivander's Wand shop, where Harry, Hermione, and Ron got their wands in the first book, Philosopher's Stone. At the wand store, the line was filled with little kids waiting to get their first wand to cast their first spell. The kids were going crazy, but the funny thing was that it wasn't only kids waiting in line. Teenagers, adults, and even grandparents were waiting in line to get their own wands. Once you got your wand from the wand keeper, they gave you a list of spells and charms to perform with your friends and family. Not only was this something fun and enjoyable for kids, but it made it a family activity for everyone to participate to. Rowling's didn't just provide a text for everyone to enjoy, she created a different world for people to have fun and play with.
I integrated my sources into my research effectively because I took a lot of time into Rowling's background and tried to understand how she came up with her creative style. In particularly, the book by John Granger helped analyze how Rowling used her knowledge of science and magic to create such intrinsic spells. I also wanted to make notice of how creative and imaginative Rowling was in that she could make up spells and explain what that spell could do to an individual or object. I think I did a good job showcasing Rowling's creativity and imagination by incorporating a instructional forum. This forum illustrates Rowling's intelligence, while also showing Rowling's fun and creative side in her literature.
I found that I successfully integrated my sources to communicate to my audience. I did this effectively because I showed the creative side of Rowling's work. Even though all of Harry Potter is extremely creative, the way in which Rowling specifically created the school of wizardry and how to cast spells is very interesting and astonishing. I find that my genre will communicate this interesting and creative aspect towards my audience. My audience is able to see her creative imagination she put in with developing casting spells and charms. This genre also exhibits Rowling's identity as a brilliant writer and author.
